Project Activate: A Communication App for People with Physical Disabilities

Project Activate is a free communication app designed for people who are unable to speak or use technology with their hands due to physical disabilities, such as ALS, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or multiple sclerosis. The app allows users to activate customized preset communications by making facial gestures, such as smiling or looking up.

With Project Activate, users can play a text-to-speech phrase, play audio to express themselves or control a smart speaker, send a text message, or make a phone call. The app also provides direct access to loved ones or caregivers who can customize communications and adjust the face gesture sensitivity.

It is important to note that Project Activate is not designed as a call bell or a means to communicate in the event of an emergency. It is also not intended to replace a speech-generating device, but rather to be used as a secondary device or in situations where it is impractical to set up and calibrate an SGD. Sending text messages and making phone calls require a phone plan, and standard calling and messaging rates apply. To prevent device wear, it is recommended to close the app or turn off the device for an hour every few days if running continuously.
